What is the Safest Car?

50 years ago, automotive manufacturers placed very little emphasis on making their cars safe. Often lacking a roll cage (some even with a permanent soft top), airbags or any ambitions for a “crumple zone,” automobiles were designed for style and performance.

These days, we know you can get both into a vehicle that takes into account the numerous factors contributing to automotive accidents. Kia has been one of the leaders in this push.

When shoppers on our lot, or in our showroom, ask us about Kia safety, we’re happy to elaborate on features like Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and more.

It is nice, however, to have what we know about Kia’s outstanding focus on safety validated by a non biased third party testing group – especially one with the reputation of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Which 2018 Kia Models Have Won Safety Awards?

As some of the earliest released 2018 models, the IIHS concluded their testing of both the 2018 Kia Sportage and 2018 Kia Soul, declaring them both as winners of the coveted Top Safety Pick + award.

The Soul, a personality-filled subcompact crossover, features a handful of safety refinements that complement the advanced technology and available performance the model offers.

The 2018 Sportage, on the other hand, provides a more conventional small crossover ride, that doesn’t skimp on safety features, personality or amenities.

In order to achieve this award, vehicles have to earn “good” or higher ratings in a handful of tests that analyze how ready a car is to protect its cabin in the event of a collision.

These crash tests include:

  • Side impact
  • Small overlap front collision
  • Moderate overlap front collision
  • Roof strength test
  • Head restraints test
  • Front crash prevention – requires “advanced” or “superior” rating
  • Headlight test – requires “acceptable” or “good” rating

Both models join four other Kia models that have been selected by the IIHS for this designation: The 2017 Kia Cadenza, Kia Optima, Kia Forte and Kia Sorento.

Recently-released models like the 2018 Kia Sedona, and yet-to-be released Kia Cadenza, should soon be available for testing by the IIHS in the coming months. As these vehicles become available for test-drive, we’ll let you know right here on our blog, so be sure to check back regularly!
