Start the Vehicle and Idle for a Few Minutes

We recommend idling the vehicle at the car lot to start, at least for a few minutes. Take the time to walk around, check for any scratches, dents, rust, etc, and make a note of the overall condition. Also, check the tires. Make sure they look in good condition. Next, you’ll want to sit in the vehicle. Pay attention to the sounds the engine makes – does it rattle? Whine? You want to be sure it’s in good working order before moving on. Now, turn on the AC, the radio, and the heat – if needed – to test them out. All good? Time to hit the road.

Take it for a Drive on the Road

Bring it off the lot and out into the world, preferably on a road that has several stops to make sure that your brakes are in good working order. You’ll want to make sure that they aren’t loose, don’t make sounds, and don’t feel too stiff. You’ll also want to see how the vehicle handles doing turns, 90-degree ones, to check the handling. Next, find a road with potholes – shouldn’t be too hard – and see how it handles them. If you think the vehicle’s good, its time to step it up.

Bring it to the Highway

Now we want to see how the vehicle handles speeds in excess of 55 MPH. You’ll want to make lane changes here and there, to see how its handling is at high speeds. You’ll also want to make sure there’s no pulling in one direction or the other, as that might mean an alignment issue. If everything checks out here, you’re good to go!
